Eliminate Racial Discrimination

All humans are born with the same rights and all can contribute to building a society. No race is superior to another, and we can focus on working together. We can eliminate conditions and attitudes that perpetuate racial discrimination.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.

Each of us can stand up to racial prejudice and intolerance wherever we find it. Here are a few ways it can be done:

  • Learning about other people and cultures more deeply than just holidays and celebrations.
  • Know about your own culture’s history.
  • Talk about race with the people you care about and collectively advocate.
  • Actively avoid trite phrases: think before you speak.
  • Calmly offer an alternative point of view when someone else expresses racism.
  • Offer support to friends who experience the brunt of racism.
  • Boost the voice of minorities by sharing content.
