Guess what, being married can mean whatever you and your partner agree on.
Although a traditional marriage has a man and a woman who then go on to cohabit and raise children, there is a lot of scope for possibitlity. What if it’s okay for people who are committed to each other to live separately? What if best friends could commit to each other, disregarding their gender or sexual preferences? What if a married couple keep their finances separate? What if legally being married is unnecesary to a lifetime commitment? What if a marriage were formed only as a coparenting endeavour and not a promise of sexual exclusivity? People and their needs vary widely, not to mention circumstances. What if we made laws that protected people rather than social structure?
